A view on the King’s Speech and what’s next for Digital Identity

The King’s Speech this week brought Digital Identity back into the spotlight and naturally raises the question: what happens next?
The honest answer is that there is still a lot we don’t yet know. We don’t have clarity on the exact timetable, the detailed scope of future legislation, or precisely how any new framework will interact with existing schemes and guidance.
However, there are a few things we can say with confidence:
1. The direction of travel is clear-digital identity is here to stay
Digital identity already underpins many everyday processes, from Right to Work and Right to Rent checks through to anti-money laundering checks and registration of Directors. Whatever the final shape of any legislation, organisations will continue to need reliable ways to confirm that people are who they say they are, remotely and in person.
2. Standards will evolve, but the fundamentals won’t change
Requirements, schemes and technical standards may shift, but the core principles remain the same: strong identity evidence, robust fraud controls, clear audit trails and a focus on protecting individuals’ data. That is where we already concentrate our effort and investment.
3. TrustID is well placed, whatever the outcome
We’ve spent years working to meet existing Home Office, DCIT and industry guidance. We were a founding member of the Association of Document Verification Professionals (ADVP), our team tracks policy developments closely, and we regularly adapt our services as rules and best practice change. That means:
- If new legislation tightens requirements, we are ready to respond.
- If frameworks become more flexible or more sector-specific, we can tune our solutions accordingly.
- If there is a period of uncertainty or transition, we can help customers interpret the implications and stay compliant day to day.
Our priority is to give organisations practical, compliant tools and expert guidance so they can keep operating with confidence while the policy picture continues to develop.
4. We’ll keep our customers informed and supported
As more detail emerges, we will share clear, plain‑English updates on what it means for identity checks in practice, and how TrustID can help. In the meantime, our advice is to focus on getting the basics right: using trusted identity verification from a certified DVS provider, embedding consistent processes, and putting fraud prevention and user experience at the centre of your approach.
If you’d like to talk about what the digital identity might mean for your organisation’s identity checks, our team is happy to discuss where you are today and how we can help you prepare for whatever comes next.
