UK Digital Identity Framework – new terminology changes IDSP to DVS

The UK Digital Identity and Attributes Trust Framework (UKDIATF) has recently been updated, with some important changes to terminology. These updates aim to bring greater clarity and consistency, making the framework easier to understand and apply – both for organisations delivering digital identity services and for those who rely on them.
One of the most notable changes is the introduction of the term Digital Verification Service (DVS). This replaces the term Identity Service Provider (IDSP), which you may have seen in earlier guidance. To be a DVS, you must now be listed on the government’s DVS register. In practice, DVSs are specialist providers who carry out identity checks behind the scenes – from validating documents and matching applicant photos to IDs, through to running fraud detection processes. Under the updated framework, TrustID is now defined as a DVS. Importantly, while the terminology has changed, the services we provide remain exactly the same.
The framework also introduces Supplementary Codes of Practice, which replace the term “Digital Schemes” used previously for areas such as digital Right to Work, DBS and Right to Rent checks.
Another helpful update is clearer language around the difference between evidence and credentials. Evidence refers to the original document or data, such as a passport. A credential, on the other hand, is the secure digital version of that evidence – one that can be reused with confidence.
For businesses, these changes mean a simpler, more transparent framework, with a clearer understanding of responsibilities across the digital identity ecosystem – and continued reassurance that the services you use are working to recognised, government-backed standards.
